$5,000 Grant
Plant-based Musical is an original Australian musical theatre production, written and developed right here in Bendigo. Combining sharp comedy, vibrant music, and thought-provoking storytelling, a two-week premiere season will be held at the Capital Theatre Bendigo from 30 September to 10 October 2027.
Bringing a brand-new musical from concept to reality requires extensive pre-production design. Beyond the script and score, creating a immersive world for the stage requires investment in set concepts and custom costume design.
The show imagines the life and times of a suburban garden, populated by singing and dancing plants, so the creative task for the production’s designers, Colin McLean (costumes) and Jarryd Eriksson (set design), is substantial.
Empowering Local Creative Arts
Benefit Bendigo is proud to be backing a local team to bring a locally-written story to life, and helping build long-term capacity in Greater Bendigo’s creative sector. Our funding means that local performers, technicians, and designers have high-quality opportunities right here in Central Victoria, and shows that world-class theatre can be developed and premiered locally.
A grant to the Plant-based Musical team has provided critical seed funding to enable this local production team to:
- Develop set concepts by transforming sketched environments into scale models, which can be refined before being professionally constructed, and
- Craft character costume prototypes, which demonstrate how plants change over the seasons and as they either grow and bloom or wither from disease and neglect
